Village midwives dedication promotes obstetrics care in Vietnam northernmost province
A village-based midwifery programme in the northernmost
province of Ha Giang has been active since 2008, which provided training for
139 midwives. The midwives in the villages have helped locals progressively
realise how important reproductive healthcare is. In addition to giving aid to
women giving birth, midwives have imparted their knowledge on maternal and
obstetrics healthcare to locals, increasingly supplanting the customs of the
area. They also coordinated with the commune’s clinic and local authorities to
launch immunisation and malnutrition prevention campaigns. Despite their
dedication, the midwives are working without pay, which will be difficult to
keep the team together. The Ha Giang Province Department of Health has called
for relevant bodies to offer financial support to the midwives. VNA Photo: Minh
