Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has stressed that wrongdoings by any individual or organisation must not be allowed to affect the country’s overall efforts to have the European Commission’s “yellow card” warning lifted.
He made the statement while chairing the 32nd meeting of the National Steering Committee on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing on March 3. The event, held both in person and online with 22 coastal provinces and cities, reviewed progress in implementing the EC’s recommendations and preparing for its fifth inspection mission.
In his concluding remarks, PM Chinh underscored the dual objective of ensuring the sustainable development of Vietnam’s fisheries sector in line with the country’s broader ambition of double-digit growth and, at the same time, securing the removal of the "yellow card" related to IUU fishing. This concerns not only economic growth but also national reputation and the legitimate interests of fishermen and businesses.
He pointed out persistent shortcomings that must be thoroughly handled within this week, stressing that the application of digital technology and data to fisheries management must be further integrated and synchronised, and the five EC recommendations must be addressed comprehensively and reflected clearly in official reports.
He instructed ministries and localities to resolve outstanding issues definitively and avoid vague or generalised reporting, noting that every
task must be assigned to specific agencies and individuals with clear accountability.
Emphasising communication and public outreach, the Government leader urged stronger efforts to raise awareness among fishermen and enterprises about their legal obligations and long-term interests.
Combating IUU fishing and promoting sustainable fisheries development, he affirmed, is a central and urgent political task for Party committees and administrations all levels in coastal areas.
The PM requested thorough preparations for the upcoming EC inspection, ensuring that all documentation and data are accurate, complete and consistent. He emphasised that under no circumstances should new violations occur in areas related to the EC recommendations.
He assigned Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha, head of the National Steering Committee on Combating IUU Fishing, to directly oversee implementation, address any issues arising, and promptly report matters beyond his authority to the PM./.
