Hanoi (VNA) - The National Lung Hospital, in collaboration with experts and several medical institutions, has successfully performed two lung transplants for two patients in a single day.

This marks the first time in Vietnam that two lung transplant surgeries have been successfully carried out in one day.

At a press briefing on November 11 evening, Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the National Lung Hospital, said that all lung transplant surgeries performed by the hospital have achieved the highest level of success according to the standards of the UCSF Lung Transplant Programme under the University of California, San Francisco - one of the most prestigious medical centres in the United States.

The success of these two transplants has brought the total number of successful lung transplants performed by the hospital to nine, placing Vietnam among the world’s leading lung transplant centres, affirmed Luong.

After the transplants, the patients have been receiving continuous postoperative care and monitoring at the Lung Transplant Centre, 24 hours a day. At present, their health conditions are progressing well.

According to Luong, the current demand for lung transplants in Vietnam is very high - about 1,000 cases per year. With its present capabilities, the National Lung Hospital is not only the country’s leading centre for respiratory disease treatment but also the first medical institution in Vietnam capable of performing multiple lung transplants simultaneously, helping to realise the goal of saving more patients’ lives.

The hospital is in the process of establishing a Regional Lung Transplant Centre, which will not only perform lung transplants for Vietnamese patients and those from neighbouring countries, but also continue to transfer expertise, provide training, and advance lung transplant techniques to the highest international standards, comparable to those in developed nations./.
