The Red River’s water level remains higher than that of the Thuy Phuong Canal most of the year - a crucial factor enabling gravity flow, making the project feasible and reducing pumping costs. Photo: Phan Phuong – VNA

Hanoi has urgently approved 869 billion VND to upgrade the 7.7-km Thuy Phuong Canal. The project has a dual mission: to channel Red River water into the To Lich River, mitigate flooding in surrounding residential areas, and ensure irrigation for about 35 hectares of farmland. The project stretches 7.73 km, divided into nine sections, including 3.47 km of newly constructed canal and 4.3 km of existing canal requiring renovation or previously approved upgrades. Photo: Phan Phuong – VNA

Once completed, dredging and deepening the canal bed will improve and stabilize water flow. The current water level of about 3.3 m is expected to nearly double to around 6 m to ensure proper gravity flow. Photo: Phan Phuong – VNA

Hanoi to bring Red River water to clean up To Lich River
Hanoi authorities have approved an urgent budget of 869 billion VND to upgrade the Thuy Phuong Canal, expected to revive the To Lich River by supplying clean Red River water through a gravity-flow design that is considered key to reducing operating costs. The project will replenish the To Lich River with a flow capacity of 5 m³/second, mitigate flooding risks in the Tay Ho Tay (west of the West Lake) area and nearby residential zones, ensure irrigation for about 35 hectares of farmland, and provide environmental benefits. The project is expected to be completed before the 2026 rainy season. Photo: Phan Phuong – VNA
