Vietnam prioritises Lao, Cambodian teaching in border communes

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam will introduce curricula for languages from several ASEAN countries, with priority given to Lao and Cambodian at educational and training establishments in border communes from 2025 to 2030, according to a decision recently signed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long.

The decision approved a scheme on enhancing foreign language teaching and learning for the 2025–2035 period, with a vision to 2045.

The scheme aims to enhance the competitiveness of the Vietnamese workforce in both domestic and international labour markets, while building a young generation with strong foreign language proficiency to meet the country’s requirements for innovation and sustainable development in the new era.

Under the decision, pilot programmes will be rolled out to familiarise preschool children with Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages.

Concurrently, optional pilot programmes will continue for Grade 1 and Grade 2 pupils, introducing them to Chinese, Russian, French, German, Japanese and Korean, while Korean and German will be taught at general education schools meeting the required conditions.
