Nam Chien hydropower plant is located about 40km from Son La hydropower plant in Ngoc Chien and Chieng Muon communes, Son La province. The plant has an installed capacity of 200MW capacity including 2 generators, with a total reservoir capacity of 154 million cubic litres of water. The dam is a reinforced concrete arch dam with a height of 138 metres and the length of the dam crest is 273 metres, which is considered the most difficult dam to build in Vietnam.
