Unique wedding ceremony of Red Dao people in Lai Chau
The wedding ceremony of the Red Dao people in Nam Sang
village, Muong Than commune, Lai Chau province is not simply the union of two
individuals, but a microcosm of cultural identity that reflects the deep bonds
between the individual, the family and the community. Through the ups and downs
of history, Red Dao people still preserve numerous distinct traditional
customs, among them, the wedding ceremony is rich in cultural and historical
depth, as well as its strong communal spirit. On the day of the ceremony, the
bride often wears traditional costumes with many sophisticated and complicated
elements. Meanwhile, the groom’s delegation, including a matchmaker, the groom,
people carrying gifts and dowry, and a band playing trumpets, drums, gongs, and
cymbals, welcomes the bride. On the way to the bride’s house, the band plays
music to salute the villages they pass by. VNA Photo: Quý Trung
